Located in the heart of Brooklyn, Peter Luger Steak House stands as an iconic institution that redefines the steak dining experience with its unwavering dedication to quality and tradition. Specializing in classic American steakhouse fare, this legendary spot offers an array of mouthwatering dishes that have become synonymous with its name — including the famed Porterhouse Steak for Two, a perfect centerpiece for an unforgettable meal. Picture a perfectly seared steak, its exterior charred to a tantalizing crispness while the interior remains tender, juicy, and bursting with rich, beefy flavor. Diners are encouraged to drizzle the luscious meat juices and butter over each bite, elevating every forkful into a decadent indulgence.
The menu showcases a blend of hearty appetizers and sides that complement the steaks beautifully. The Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail with classic sauce offers a refreshing, briny contrast, while the Onion Rings and Luger's Special German Fried Potatoes bring a satisfyingly crispy crunch to the table. For those craving delicacy, the Lamb Chops provide a savory alternative, all while the bread basket ensures you never dine wanting. Finish your meal the sweet way with delights such as Peter Luger’s Special Holy Cow Hot Fudge Sundae — an indulgent, generously portioned dessert adored by many — or the Apple Strudel served with homemade Schlag whipped cream, which offers a perfect balance of warmth and sweetness to conclude your feast.
The dining atmosphere at Peter Luger is steeped in old-world charm and rustic elegance, a true homage to its storied history. The service style pays tribute to tradition, often featuring seasoned waitstaff who know the steakhouse craft inside and out. While the environment may feel a bit no-nonsense and straightforward, it's all rooted in respect for the food and an emphasis on authentic enjoyment. Many customers appreciate this earnest approach, sharing that their meals often feel like community rituals rather than just dinners out.
The lunch specials also provide approachable delights such as the Luger Burger, a half-pound USDA prime beef patty served on a bun, perfect for a midday treat. Pair it with one of the select canned beers — Bitburger or Köstritzer — to complete an authentically satisfying experience. Customers consistently rave about the hearty sides and appetizers served for sharing, including the creamed spinach and thinly sliced tomatoes and onions drizzled with the house’s special sauce.
Of course, it’s worth noting that Peter Luger Steak House remains a cash-only establishment — a detail that recalls the traditional and sometimes old-school nature of this beloved Brooklyn fixture. Despite the occasional challenge this presents, it does nothing to diminish the sheer quality of the food or the rich experience of dining here.
Reviews from patrons reflect the devotion Peter Luger inspires. One diner marvels at the way the steak arrives pre-sliced by the server, a clever presentation that highlights the steak’s generous size and shared nature. Others stress the importance of ordering the steak rare or medium-rare, as the dish continues to cook gently in butter on the table, enhancing its unparalleled flavor and tenderness. Many highlight the German potatoes and the legendary hot fudge sundae as must-try items that complete the authentic experience.
In essence, dining at Peter Luger Steak House is a rite of passage for steak lovers, a place where culinary craftsmanship meets Brooklyn grit. Whether you’re savoring the impeccably seasoned Porterhouse or indulging in the rich, old-school ambiance, Peter Luger provides an extraordinary and deeply satisfying steakhouse experience that lingers long after the last bite.
We shared one steak and also got their sundae which was huge! We got our steak medium and it was pretty good. We made sure to drizzle the meat juices on the meat as well. The server served us each a slice of the steak in the beginning which I thought was pretty cool. It also explained why most of the google review photos didn’t have a fully intact steak lol. The sundae was a must-try for us- they’re known for their whipped cream. However, the ice cream itself didn’t taste like anything special. There was just a LOT of hot fudge and whipped cream. It was good but also got sweet/heavy fast. It could definitely feed four. The server showed us how to eat it which is to stick the entire long spoon into the sundae and pull up lol but it was so big. Surprisingly the milk chocolate coins were really good imo. Oh and I don’t think they take credit card (it’s written on the menu) so make sure you bring a debit card or cash. If you are celebrating a birthday or something, we did see them sing happy birthday to a couple tables.
What a great experience!! I recently had the pleasure of dining at Peter Luger while visiting my son in NYC. We did jit gave reservations the evening we dined however we did arrive earlier in the evening. We shared a house salad and tried the bacon to start. The salad was perfect as a start to our meal, simple yet fresh and delicious. The main course was absolutely amazing. The steak was cooked to perfection and just melted on your tongue. We enjoyed our server Mr Lou immensely who added some fun to our meal. Nothing beats spending time with those you love especially when the time you get is limited and spending a bit of that time with a bottle of champagne and a delicious steak and great service is appreciated. This experience was a treat I won’t forget and I hope to repeat on another visit to the city.
Excellent experience. One of the best steaks I've ever had. We did feel a little rushed but service was still great. We got the steak for 2 and was amazing. Really need to order it rare or medium rare its still going to cook in the butter once it's on your table. I know it seems over the top but spooning the butter over the meat takes it to another level. Can't go wrong with the German potatoes and finished it off with some cheesecake. Had several cocktails and a beer all were very good as well. For how well known and rated the place is prices weren't super crazy but you will spend 200 to 300 for 2 people. I would definitely come back again or at least try the one in Vegas.
Love it or hate it - it's incredibly popular and not always easy to get reservations. New York mainstay, tradition, with a cult following who fiercely defend its reputation as one of the top steakhouses in the country. I'm probably one of those. Your waiter will likely be a stodgy older gentleman with years of tenor. I don't know of any other restaurant that only takes CASH - no credit cards wow. Unless you have a Luger's house account charge card. I'm one of those; had it for over 30 years. Be careful don't forget about this - bring CASH. I'd love to tell you everything is excellent, but I've always ended up ordering the same things, never did a deep dive on the menu. STEAKS. Important advice, if you go solo, don't get the single steak, order the steak for two it will cook to your temperature better, the single is too thin. You're going to love the dry-aged (they age in their own butcher shop in the basement - some creepy stories down there over the years for sure), it's a Porterhouse cut with both Filet Mignon and New York Strip, in an extra thick-cut steak. So, take the rest home for sandwiches and skip the steak for one. SIDES. Recommend several: Shrimp Cocktail they are giant - add side of extra-hot horseradish. Sliced tomato and onion (goes great with the Peter Luger Steak Sauce). Thick cut bacon, also great with the sauce. My last trip, for the first time ever I went with a Caesar Salad which was excellent. If you're looking for a rich, creamy, cheesy Creamed Spinach, you'll probably want to pass on their version - it's more "spinachy". DESSERT. I've only had one. The giant Ice Cream Sunday - assuming you have room in your stomach after dinner. Outstanding love the globs of chocolate sauce. This is not a new and shiny place, for those looking for an upscale dining experience. 100% OLD SCHOOL. I love the place, its cozy to me despite all the high energy and touristy crowds. Arrive, check in, have a Martini at the bar and take it all in. Love it or hate it - you'll have an experience you won’t regret.
Everything was absolutely perfect at Peter Luger. The steaks were flawlessly seasoned and cooked to perfection. The meat was beautifully seared on the outside while perfectly juicy and tender on the inside. The house beer was top quality and complemented the meal wonderfully. Overall, it was an excellent dining experience that I would highly recommend. Ps.. cash only is a little bit down side as I dont like to travel with to much cash in my pocket.
Peter Luger delivered an old-school steakhouse experience that felt cozy and down to earth at the same time. We shared the steak for two with creamed spinach and sautéed mushrooms. The steak (medium rare) was incredibly tender with plenty of rare, juicy center cuts, and the signature sauce added a refreshing contrast. The creamed spinach was silky and perfect; the mushrooms were fragrant but a bit salty. Portions were huge, easily more than we could finish. We ended with the cheesecake and its iconic mound of whipped cream. Our server Eric was charming and funny throughout. Also worth noting: they only take debit or cash. A hearty, high-quality, and quintessential NYC steakhouse experience!
Lunch at Peter Luger in Brooklyn was nothing short of phenomenal. I ordered the steak for one, accompanied by the creamed spinach and the legendary apple pie, and every bite was perfection. The steak was beautifully charred on the outside, tender and flavorful inside, truly the kind of cut that reminds you why this place has been an institution for over a century. The creamed spinach was rich and perfectly balanced, and the apple pie… simply unforgettable! comforting, crisp, and decadent all at once. A special mention must go to Denise, who made the experience exceptional. His warmth, attentiveness, and effortless professionalism elevated the entire meal. He struck that perfect balance between friendly and polished, making me feel genuinely welcomed and cared for.
Brilliant! Love the crazy busy vibe, the old school charm and the fantastic food. Started with the awesome bacon and a cedar salad, both perfect. We hit steak for 3 between the 3 of us and it tasted wonderful but was easily enough for 5! The PL fried potato was nice and tasty. Cheesecake and Holy Cow fudge sundae were both fantastic and massive and the side of cream was enough for days and days!!!!
